Southern California is well-known for its constant sunshine with warm weather. Also, this is one of the places where the Pacific Coast League prospered. One of the cities where a major league expansion took place in the state is San Diego. The San Diego Padres was that expansion team born in 1969. The first owner of the franchise was C. Arnholt Smith and the maiden game of the Padres was a win defeating the Houston Astros.

The Padres team was similar to most of the expansion teams with difficult and growing pains. The Padres played for the West Division of the National League and in their debut season, they ended up with 110 losses and they were the cellar dweller for their initial six seasons. Woes worsened when the ownership suffered financial problems. The franchise was close to being dealt to Washington D.C., but thanks to the founder of McDonalds Corporation, the team stayed in San Diego. This owner died in 1984 and this was also the same year that the team captured the West Division title en route to NL pennant. They lost to the Detroit Tigers in the 1984 World Series.

During the 1980s and 1990s, the Pads (also friars) main man was Tony Gwynn. Decent changes occurred in the team after this stint in the World Series, but it would take 14 long years before they had another crack at it. In the 1998 season, the Pads had to beef up its roster with a good acquisition of players resulting to their third West Division title and NL pennant, but once again, they lost in the World Series to the New Yankees.

The team played at Qualcomm Stadium from 1969 until 2003. They moved to their current ballpark, Petco Park in the 2004 season. The 2005 and 2006 season saw the team capture the West Division, but no World Series. Petco Park is a baseball-only stadium/facility featuring a natural grass playing field. This ballpark is located at the downtown and East Village district. It cost about $458 million to construct this ballpark integrating modern architecture and innovative design. The stadium offers modern amenities with relaxed and dynamic ambience reflecting the one of a kind spirit and charm of the city of San Diego.
