During the 1920s, the city of Detroit had been futile in their three attempts to acquire a pro American football franchise. The success came a decade later when George A. Richards, a radio executive in Detroit, bought the Portsmouth, Ohio, Spartans franchise and moved to Detroit in 1934. The Spartans franchise was a new team in the National Football League in 1930. The Detroit Lions was born in 1934. This franchise was loaded with rosters of the finest American football players led by Dutch Clark, who is known to be a genuine triple-threat superstar and was the last dropkicker in the NFL. The first NFL title of the Lions was acquired in 1935. One of the marks that the Lions left that last is the scheduling of Thanksgiving Day match in their maiden season and this became a tradition until this day. The 1950s is regarded as the finest seasons for the Lions; winning three NFL championships – in 1952, 1953 and 1957. Unfortunately, this was the last championship for the Lions team. After 26 years, the Lions were able to capture another title, a division title in 1983 and more divisional titles came in 1991 and 1993.

The Lions first played at the Universal Stadium from 1930 to 1933 and then moved to the University of Detroit Stadium for four seasons and then to the home stadium of the Detroit Tiger. It was at the Briggs Field where they stayed for 37 years. Then 1975, the Lions used the Pontiac Silverdome as their home stadium for another 37 years. Currently, the Lions are playing in the Ford Field in downtown Detroit and they started playing here in 2002. The Lions are owned by William Clay Ford since 1964.

The Ford Field started construction in 1999 and was completed in 2002. This new stadium is standing on 1.85 million square feet of land featuring  club seating, ground level designated for restaurants, retails and concessions and four levels of suites. The design of the Ford Field features the antiquated Hudson’s warehouse that include amenities such as restaurants, banquet facilities, retail services, office space, lounge areas, private suites and food courts. This stadium cost $500 million to construct and is highlighted by a seven-story atrium. Walking to the atrium’s end at the southeastern corner of this stadium, you will see a glass wall providing a scenic view of the skyline.
