"Sir" Elton John…though an iconic rock star since the 1970s, Elton John has managed to transition through the years and maintain superstar status. There has not been any dimming in his star, and his latest album (the first in seven years) launched in 2013. This will also kickoff the tour to mark the album, and Elton John's "The Diving Board" tour will continue on into 2014.

Few people don't know at least a handful of songs by Elton John. The interesting thing about this is that some people may not even realize that the songs they hum or sing were written by this rock star. For instance, he is responsible for the soundtrack to the Disney film "The Lion King" and the stage musical "Billy Elliot" in addition to the dozens of #1 songs over the past 40 years.

Born Reginald Dwight, he was a high quality piano player very early in his youth. One of the earliest of his professional successes was when he was partnered with Bernie Taupin and the two consistently wrote hit music for others. When he recorded his first album in 1970, it was not a huge hit, but it soon drew a lot of attention thanks to such classics as "Your Song". This brought it into the top of the charts and let John into the spotlight.

From this point on his star would just continue to rise, and by 1973 he would release the iconic "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road" that made him an international celebrity. He would remain a popular and iconic performer throughout the decades.

He created a lot of mystery around himself regarding his sexuality, and with his flamboyant garb and near cross dressing costumes, he forced many to wonder whether he was homosexual or heterosexual. By the late 1980s, he admitted to Rolling Stone that he was finally comfortable with his homosexuality and he was then leading an open lifestyle.

Few modern people care about these sorts of issues, but for a large portion of John's career it was a major question. Today he is a father and has a civil partnership with the co-parent of his children. He was knighted by the Queen, and is noted as one of the wealthiest men in the U.K. He is still a major dynamo on the stage and packs audiences whenever he does a show or a tour.
