The New York Mets is one of the first expansion franchises. The franchise was established in 1962. They played for the National League and replaced the New York Giants and the Brooklyn Dodgers. As a new team, they needed time to find their groove in playing professional baseball against the more established teams in the league. Also, they have a huge competition – getting fans and media attention as they played in the same city as that of one of the most successful franchises - the NY Yankees. The first players on the team were the New York baseball stalwarts. The debut season was a losing one and they improved slowly. In 1969, they become part of the East division of NL and it was in this season that they captured their first East Division title en route to an NL pennant and the first of two World Series titles.
Their second World Series championship happened in 1986. Overall, the Mets have five east division titles with four NL pennants, two wild card appearances to go along with two World Series titles. Their last World Series appearance was in 2006 wherein they lost to ST. Louis Cardinals
The Mets played at the Polo Ground for the first two seasons and then moved to Shea Stadium where they played from 1964 to 2008. This stadium was named in honor of William Shea, who brought the NL back to NY. The franchise has been playing at the new Citi Field since 2009. The construction of this new ballpark took into serious account the comfort of the fans. Enhanced amenities were also built in. This ballpark was primarily designed as a park for pitchers with a big outfield. The exterior is composed of bricks similar to that of Ebbets Field.
