Seattle first tasted having a Major League Baseball team in 1969 with the inception of the Seattle Pilots as an expansion team. They played in Sick’s Stadium and typical of any expansion team, went on to finish the season on a losing end. After this, the Pilots moved out and went to Milwaukee.  Seattle fans waited for eight years until the Seattle Mariners franchise was born and first played at the ballpark called the Kingdome, which was the first-ever indoor ballpark at that time. The Mariners were born in 1977 and played for the West Division of the American League up to this date.

As a new team, things did not come in their way. For the first 10 of their 13 seasons, they were the cellar dwellers or next to it. Things started to change in 1988, and by 1991 they posted a winning season for the first time in history. Success truly came in 1995 when they captured the West division title en route to the playoff appearance. In the second round of playoffs in 1995, they were able to defeat the NY Yankees in their best-of-five affairs, 3-2 but in the ALCS games, they lost to Cleveland Indians. Another playoff stint occurred for the team in 1997 as the West division titleholder, sandwiched by losing seasons in 1998 and 1999 and another playoff appearance in 2000 as the wild card team and in 2001 as the West division titleholder.

The Mariners played at the Kingdome for 22 seasons (from 1977 to 1999) and this stadium was imploded in 2000. The name of this ballpark came from its location – being close to King County of Washington. From 1999, the Mariners played their home games at the Safeco Field. This ballpark features a unique retractable roof. The playing field is made with natural-grass that has been custom blended with four different kinds of Kentucky bluegrass plus two types of the perennial ryegrass. This ballpark is considered as one of the most sustainable and efficiently operated in Major League Baseball. One of the interesting and commendable things about this ballpark is the environmental consciousness of the team. They recycle about 70% of the entire waste generated each game and they have largely minimized the consumption of electricity, natural gas and water.
