The Atlanta Hawks were originally founded in 1946 as the Buffalo Bisons before becoming the Tri-Cities Blackhawks the following season. Before ending up in Atlanta in 1968, the team played in Milwaukee and St. Louis, with St. Louis being the city that saw the lone Championship in franchise history. The team has won four conference championships, all of which came when they were in the Western Conference, and the team has won four divisional titles.

The Hawks have seen some of the greatest players in the history of the league wear their uniform and represent their team. Among the best have been Dominique Wilkins, Lou Hudson and Bob Petit. The team has also retired No. 17 for former owner, Ted Turner. Other popular players that have competed for the Hawks include Spud Webb, Alana Henderson, Dikembe Mutumbo, Joe Johnson, Kevin Willis and Al Horford.

One of the best players in the NBA today is Horford. Horford was drafted by the Hawks with the third overall pick of the 2007 NBA Draft out of Florida. Horford has developed himself into a lethal offensive and defensive threat. The two-time NCAA Champion has made the NBA All Star game twice, made the All-NBA Third Team and the NBA All-Rookie First Team. Horford is also a player for the Dominican Republic national team.

When fans of the Hawks want to catch their team playing at the Dirty South, they head to the Philips Arena. The arena has been home to the Hawks since 1999 after ground was broken in 1997. The project cost more than $213 million, which would equate to nearly $300 million in 2013. Among the most popular seats for fans of the Hawks at the Philips Arena include the lower level area at half court and the various suites including Hospitality Suites that can accommodate anywhere from 8-to-23 people.
