The Atlanta Hawks were originally founded in 1946 as the Buffalo Bisons before becoming the Tri-Cities Blackhawks the following season. Before ending up in Atlanta in 1968, the team played in Milwaukee and St. Louis, with St. Louis being the city that saw the lone Championship in franchise history. The team has won four conference championships, all of which came when they were in the Western Conference, and the team has won four divisional titles.

The team has also retired No. 17 for former owner, Ted Turner. One of the best players in the NBA today is Horford. Horford was drafted by the Hawks with the third overall pick of the 2007 NBA Draft out of Florida. Horford has developed himself into a lethal offensive and defensive threat. The two-time NCAA Champion has made the NBA All Star game twice, made the All-NBA Third Team and the NBA All-Rookie First Team. Horford is also a player for the Dominican Republic national team.
