The Los Angeles Lakers franchise is one of the most successful in the history of the National Basketball Association. The team was founded in 1947 and played in Minneapolis until 1960. During their time in Minneapolis, the Lakers won five championships including three straight from 1952-54. When the team moved to Los Angeles, they continued their successful run, adding 11 more titles including another three-peat from 2000-02. Overall, they trail only the Boston Celtics who have won 17 NBA Championships.

Throughout their existence, the team has seen numerous figures that stood out above the game wear their jersey. The team has retired nine jerseys from their legendary players including Wilt Chamberlain, Magic Johnson, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Shaquille O'Neal and James Worthy. The Lakers will add another jersey to that list as soon as Kobe Bryant decides to retire from the sport. For years, the Lakers were the team stars wanted to play in because of their rich history.

When the Lakers drafted Earvin "Magic" Johnson out of Michigan State with the first overall pick of the 1979 NBA Draft, it began the "Showtime" era in Los Angeles. During this time, the team found a way to recapture their past success from their days in Minneapolis. With Johnson wearing the Lakers' uniform, the team won five NBA Championships, including three NBA Finals where Johnson won the MVP award. Johnson also won three regular season MVP awards and could have done more in his career if he didn't retire after being diagnosed with HIV.

The Lakers play their home games at the Staples Center in the heart of Los Angeles. The stadium is also the home of the Clippers, but home games for the Lakers is somewhat of a show in itself with stars like Jack Nicholson and Adam Sandler regularly frequenting the NBA action.
