Dating back to Ancient Greece, the sport of boxing is pretty basic. It is a hand to hand, combat sport that puts two evenly matched partners up against one another. It is not just two guys pummeling each other, however, because they both have to be quick, calculating, strong, and have tremendous endurance.

The earliest versions used bare hands, but today it is a lot more humane. The competitors wear special gloves, mouth guards, and have a referee to bring things to an end if it gets too dangerous or unfair.

What is so interesting about modern boxing is that its rules were written in the 1860s. Known as the Marquess of Queensberry rules, they are used to guide professional and amateur boxing contests all over the globe. There are only two ways that boxing is officially regulated, and that is as an "Amateur" and as a "Professional" sport.

The amateur versions include the Olympic Games and the Commonwealth Games. Boxers wear protective head gear and do not participate in lengthy rounds. This is quite different than the professional versions that are the more famous matches.

For example, the "heavyweight prize fighters" are in the Professional boxing world. This is actually a pretty diverse sport in which the bouts are fought for prize money and overseen by some sort of authority. These fights are usually also going to bring someone a championship belt - or get them closer to the competition that determines a championship.

Though it takes a lot of brute force and endurance to become a champ, Professional boxing has some of the most colorful personalities in the sporting world. Mohammad Ali, Floyd Mayweather, Mike Tyson, Jake LaMotta, and many others (according to the BleacherReport) make that list.

Boxing is an ancient but remarkably technical sport with a lot of moves, rules, and even styles. Some matches are based on styles and some are meant to determine a championship. They can be seen in some of the biggest stadiums in the world, and are something you will want to witness in person at least once in your lifetime.
