Steely Dan Tickets

It is pretty amazing when a band formed in the 70s is still recording and performing, and long time fan favorite, Steely Dan is one of those impressive groups. Created as a jazz and rock band during the 70s, they will be touring again during 2014 in conjunction with their "Jamalot Ever After" tour with 47 tour dates.  This should make for one of the most memorable concert tours in years.

Steely Dan is truly unique among the bands of the late 70s due to their unusual themes and sound. They had some of the most flawless recording sessions on record, and founders Donald Fagen and Walter Becker would often bring in almost a dozen sound engineers and many more musicians to get their music just right.

The band only toured briefly in the 70s and then actually broke up in 1981. They still had a lot of dedicated followers over the years, and this is why they were able to sell more than 40 million albums even when not making new recordings or doing any tours. They got together again in the 1990s and won a Grammy award for their new material.

Rolling Stone says that they are "less a band than a concept," and others say that they are nearly impossible to pin down in term of their overall sound. The reason for this, say the band's founders, is the fact that huge amounts of emphasis are placed on the music from each instrument rather than their collective sounds.

The mastery of the recording process keeps everything clean and pure, plus there are the unusual lyrics to their music as well. Consider that many fans describe the songs as if they were being sung by a familiar "someone". This is due to the creation of a personality or narrative voice for their most popular hits. There is not a lot of pure emotion or sentimentality to their work, and it is more about unusual word choice and less direct subject matter that seems to really grab listeners.

As unusual and precise as their recordings might be, Steely Dan has sold millions of albums and still packs houses when they perform. Their impressive skill, unique vocal styling, unusual lyrics, and smooth jazzy tones are still appealing to most modern listeners. Though they only recorded nine albums, they created a very memorable legacy that still attracts new fans today.
