Like a phoenix that continually rises from the ashes, The Fillmore in San Francisco, CA has risen, declined, and risen again. Opened in the early 1900s, it was not destined to be a suitable site for concerts in the future. After all, who could have predicted the need for stadium and arena seating in order to enjoy concerts by the day's top performers? However, the Fillmore is such a well designed venue that it is still among the preferred sites for some of the leading bands and groups of the era.

It had already started to decline when, in 1968, it was purchased and used by Bill Graham. This famous concert promoter is known for providing a spot for the vital music scene of San Francisco of the 60s to perform. The stage of the Fillmore was graced by the likes of Janis Joplin, Jefferson Airplane, The Eagles, Steve Miller, and so many more.

The arrival of the 80s and the age of MTV did present some challenges, but Graham continued to have concerts at The Fillmore. When the famous earthquake of 1989 hit, it damaged the building and it remained closed until 1994 (following renovation). From that time on it has been a popular venue, with The Smashing Pumpkins performing the first show in the reopened theater.

Seating in the Fillmore is considered to be "general admission". This means one thing - get there ahead of time if you want to stake out a claim to the seat or area you prefer. All available sitting and standing areas are available to those with general admission tickets, and that means it can be a bit of a "free for all". However, the acoustics of The Fillmore are great, and even if you end up at the back of the hall, you will get good sound and a pretty decent view of the performers.

Some of the shows do make balcony seating available, and this is usually snapped up quickly. Why? Because it lets you sit back and enjoy the show. Otherwise, you are down on the floor and likely to end up dancing the night away and feeling it the next day.

According to Wayback Machine, those who head to The Fillmore can be part of the original tradition of enjoying the best popular music being made today. The venue is great for music fans and is intimate enough to make for a memorable experience.
