The Tennessee Titans are currently owned by Bud Adams Jr. and he was also one of the founding persons of the American Football League way back in 1959. They played in the AFL as the Houston Oilers from 1960 to 1969. As the Oilers, the franchise won the titles in 1960 and 1961, but lost the championship round in 1962 to the Dallas Texans. This game was recorded as the longest – two overtimes and ended in 77 minutes and 54 seconds of action. In the merger of the NFL-AFL in 1970, the franchise reached the post-season/playoff just 10 times as the Houston Oilers starting from 1978 until 1993 (they have seven seasons where they were unable to reach the playoffs). As Oilers and Titans, the franchise had 21 playoffs appearances. They also have nine divisional titles with one conference championship.
In 1997, the Houston Oilers franchise moved to Nashville and was named the Tennessee Oilers. They used this named from 1997 and 1998. From 1999 onwards, they used the name Titans.
The Titans began its AFL career at the Jeppesen Stadium from 1960 to 1964 and then moving to Rice Stadium from 1965 to 1967. The Oilers spent their history at the Houston Astrodome from 1968 to 1996. When they moved to Nashville, they first played at the Liberty Bowl Memorial Stadium as their stadium was still under construction back then. They moved to Vanderbilt Stadium in 1998 and after the completion of their new stadium in 1999, they have been playing there – the LP Field.
This stadium is located in the central east bank of Cumberland River and sitting on the 105 acres of land and is near the downtown Nashville. The Titans appeared for the first time in the Super Bowl in 1999 at the Super Bowl XXXIV where they lost to the St. Louis Rams.
LP Field features open-air stadiums with 12,000 club seats plus 175 private suites. The naming rights were given to Louisiana Pacific in 2006 and these rights will last for 10 years. There are about 2,000 trees planted on the property of the stadium. Aside from being the home stadium for the Titans, it also serves as the home field for the varsity football team of Tennessee State University.
