Noted for the widespread praise he has received from most of the famous music industry publications, The Weeknd has been compared to Michael Jackson in Elle, and described as a songbird by others. This makes perfect sense when you learn that his influences include quiet storm, funk, soul, and indie rock among other musical forms.

Born in Toronto, The Weeknd first started recording in 2010. At that time he used YouTube to release the tracks, and this grabbed a load of media attention. Within a year he was releasing further recordings through is self owned website and this created even more buzz. He was nominated for awards and began touring.

This allowed him to begin meeting famous performers and collaborating with the likes of Drake during the summer of 2011. This led to two more releases, and an ever increasing number of diehard fans.

By 2012 he was ready to appear at Coachella and followed up with sold out shows in New York and Europe. This solidified his reputation and got him the support needed, and he is going to be releasing his first album in the fall of 2013.

What is it that makes people fall in love with is work? Many credit the falsetto voice and the bass lines of his work, but others say that it is the use of sampling that grabs the ear. The Weeknd himself indicates that he favors R&B, but that influences like Prince can be easily heard in his work too.

For now, he is considered a very hot property and a serious artist to watch. He uses social media to keep in touch with his many fans, and this is a great way to get news of his latest tracks and releases, and experience his sound for yourself.
